Developing good academic skills will bring greater academic success. These study skills workshops can help you improve your academic performance. Most workshops are in SUB 1, Suite 3129. Alternate locations are listed below. Workshop location will also be listed when you register.
The Academic Skills Certificate Program utilizes these workshops to help students develop their study skills and receive recognition for their effort. Participants complete an initial assessment and receive an individually tailored plan of workshops, audiotapes, videotapes, and readings designed to enhance academic performance.

Academic Survival Skills for Finals
The end of the semester can leave you feeling overwhelmed by everything that you have to do. During this session, participants will develop a plan to complete their final papers, projects, and exams and discuss techniques for managing stress.
College Reading Strategies
This workshop provides information on strategies for various reading demands. Learn techniques for getting the most out of textbooks, literature, and research articles.
How to Learn Crash Course
Get ready for the semester by attending this academic skills workshop the week before classes begin. Topics covered are: good study strategies, effective note-taking techniques, individual learning styles, ways to be test-wise and well prepared for exams, and effective time management.
Critical Thinking: Thinking Outside the Box
Thinking and problem solving at the college level requires well-developed and structured cognitive skills. In this workshop, we will teach you how to be purposeful, reasonable, and goal oriented in your thinking in order to make decisions, formulate inferences, and solve problems.
Be well prepared and test-wise for your next exam. This workshop teaches preparation and test-taking strategies.
How Do You Learn Best?
This workshop explores effective study methods. You’ll examine how you learn best, explore strategies to capitalize on your learning style, and learn methods to transfer information from short-term to long-term memory.
The ability to concentrate, to focus one’s attention exclusively on the task at hand, is essential to learning. Both internal and external distractions can make concentration difficult. This workshop examines these distractions and strategies to enhance concentration. You learn to identify your distractions and develop strategies to eliminate them, practice relaxation techniques to improve focus, and explore other tactics to improve your concentration.
Managing Performance Anxiety
Does worrying about a test make it hard for you to study? Do you forget all you know just as the exam begins? Any time you are asked to perform, tension can interfere with you doing your best. This workshop examines the reasons for performance anxiety and explores strategies for coping with it.
Math Study Strategies
Learn strategies for learning math, preparing for and taking math exams, and dealing with math anxiety. The information in this workshop is relevant to any course which involves numbers and problem solving such as Accounting, Physics, or Biostatics.
Want to improve your memory? Come to this session to learn how memory works and strategies for remembering and recalling information.
Motivation and Goal-Setting
What do you want to do with your life? Are you feeling overwhelmed or confused about your future? Are you unclear as to which path to take? This workshop examines the power of higher education and its role in your future. Learn why it is important to look at the BIG PICTURE when planning your course work and choosing your major. This workshop also allows you to explore your values and see how the choices you make now will lay the foundation for your future.
Note Taking Strategies
Note taking is an essential study strategy. Notes supplement memory and can be used to create review guides prior to exams. During this workshop, participants will learn strategies for listening, writing notes, and reviewing afterwards.
Is clutter getting in the way of your academic success? Do you have trouble keeping up with all your papers, texts, e-mails, and assignments for your classes? Come to this workshop to learn techniques to better manage your paper flow and arrange your desk, computer files, and living space in ways that will help you be more efficient and productive. We’ll help you develop an individualized plan to meet your unique needs, style, and schedule. Get ready for your classes with a clean sweep!
Do you find yourself constantly putting off projects, assignments, or commitments? You may be caught in the “not now, later” trap. Overcome this difficulty by discovering what makes you procrastinate.
Scheduling & Time Management
Do you spend too much or too little time studying? Learn the skills of successful time management and increase your ability to balance study with other activities.
In this workshop, you will learn about the negative effects of poor sleep and discover how to improve their “sleep hygiene.” You will also learn relaxation techniques specifically designed to calm the mind at night and improve sleep quality.
Sleep Better workshops are one hour long and open to all Mason students. No initial consultation at Counseling and Psychological Services is necessary. Registration is preferred but not required.

The Mindfulness Workshops will teach you skills to live in the present moment, increasing your enjoyment in life, by learning ways to cope with stress, deal with relationship challenges, and regulate your emotions.

Living Emotionally Healthy
This is a workshop recommended for students who may feel overwhelmed by circumstances in their lives and experience difficulties managing their emotions. Attending this workshop will help students who have a tendency to feel overwhelmed learn to cultivate self-awareness and regulate their emotions more effectively.
