Homecoming Week

Welcome to the Spring 2025 Semester!

On behalf of the entire Learning Services team, I am delighted to welcome you to our newsletter. My name is Vicki Dominick, and I serve as the Associate Director of Learning Services. With 16 years at Mason, I am dedicated to helping students achieve their academic goals.

Learning Services offers a variety of support services, all included in your tuition and fees. Each week, we present 2-3 Academic Success Workshops on topics such as time management, reading, notetaking, and motivation. You can register for these workshops on Mason 360.

Additionally, we offer one-on-one Academic Coaching sessions. Our coaches provide tailored strategies for effective time management, goal setting, and study techniques. Academic Coaching empowers students to overcome obstacles, enhance their academic performance, and cultivate lifelong skills essential for success in college and beyond.

George Mason University has partnered with Knack, a peer-to-peer tutoring platform, to provide access to high-level tutoring services for select courses each semester. These tutors are current George Mason students who have previously succeeded in the same courses, and the tutoring is free for our students! Learning Services also maintains a list of campus-wide tutoring resources on our website.

We look forward to supporting you throughout your academic journey!

Homecoming Week

By Marissa Malone | Friday, January 24th, 2025

Homecoming is a time to have week-long, non-stop fun by going out with friends, attending sports games, and attending all the events that the festive week brings. It can get quite busy between attending basketball games, preparing outfits, and making plans to meet up with friends. For some, Homecoming can mean securing a study room in Fenwick to get a head start on homework and study for an upcoming exam, and for others, it can be a method of self-care by taking time to socialize and spend time with friends.

We can get so lost in the chaos of homecoming that we might forget to prioritize the necessities in our lives such as balancing having fun and academics. At Learning Services, we believe in the necessity of balancing one’s personal life and school responsibilities through practicing effective time management strategies. In creating balance between the two, it can lessen your chances of experiencing burnout, encourage your chances of getting good grades, and contribute to a healthy social life.

One way to practice good time management is having a planner or calendar system to keep track of upcoming due dates for assignments and tests, allowing you to stay ahead or on top of your work. Another way is to include time to have fun in your schedule. Whether that’s going to eat with friends at the dining hall a few times a week or scheduling a weekly phone call with a loved one, make sure you are creating time to engage in activities that fill your cup. To get help on how to manage your time or create a schedule feel free to attend one of our workshops, or, schedule an appointment with an academic coach who will work with you to help ensure balance between your personal life and school life. Have fun at this year’s Homecoming!
